Slow is strong.

I was in a relational leadership session and made a light comment about “snail energy” to describe how I was feeling. I thought we’d move on, but the whole group began to resonate. Something softened. People felt more alive.

When we use animal metaphors for humans, we often refer to more powerful species: we feel ourself ‘soar like an eagle’ or be ‘strong like a lion’ to face the ‘wolf in the boardroom’ and so on.

But this time, it was the snail - a distant relative of ours - that represented something very human and the quiet wisdom we needed to move through the madness and complexity of the world that day.

Snails may look vulnerable, but they’ve survived for hundreds of millions of years and play a vital role in sustaining the soil and ecosystems.

So if you feel pressure to go faster to keep up, here are a few insights from snail energy:

• The only place to be is here.

• Home is always available within.

• Nothing is rushed. No one is lost.

• Restraint liberates flow.

• Small moves pave the way.
