Embrace your power (consciouly) [Wise Wednesdays]

Power is neither good nor bad.

But most people have a contentious relationship with it.

This is one insight that people surfaced at the RSA deep dive on power last week.

Some said they were comfortable with power; others that they were more comfortable with vulnerability. And some that they were a bridge between the two.

Often it depends on the context and what triggers you to collapse and abdicate your power; or to contract and abuse it. Each with their consequences…

Two poles You may be so powerful that you can make anything happen and get your way all the time but notice that you’re disconnected from a deeper sense of purpose, wellbeing or even intimacy in your relationships. Or you may have disowned your power so much that you’re at the mercy of everything and everyone – you’ve all but forgotten how to slow down and say NO. To paraphrase Shakespeare: Power is neither good nor bad, only thinking makes it so. We all have power, whether we use it or not. You might call power “energy in flow”. The value of your power then becomes a correlate of the thinking and beliefs that channel it. With a clear mind and heart, your power is invested in the right things. It’s why I take you on a deep journey that starts with Presence before moving into Power and Possibility, if you're one of my clients. You embrace their power *consciously*. You don’t have to feel powerful to be powerful. If you think your boss, job, partner, kids, business, team, the weather are the problem, pause right there. First, understand how you feel *about* power and you’ll unlock the insights and answers you need to turn things around.

But why should you care about power? You just want to have a nice life, right?

I have one question for you: If not you, then who?

“Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Have a great week,

Amina
