The unbearable lightness of being? [Wise Wednesdays | Anyday]

I didn’t understand the book at the time. Perhaps I was too young, as a teenager. But I’ve been thinking about The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera.
The characters are caught between the overwhelming heaviness of decisions and their consequences (which can lead to anxiety) versus the meaninglessness of their decisions (the unbearable lightness which can lead to depression). They’re caught in either things mattering too much or not enough. It’s a dilemma that can affect anyone who starts thinking about the meaning of life…
Often, clients who are either naturally reflective or drawn to these questions by life events start to reach this depth of contemplation but find it challenging to hold it all while living a ‘normal life’ and facing darkness in the world. They’re waking up at night thinking about the purpose of life while leading organisations, presenting at conferences, and feeding themselves and families. The coaching space then becomes a kind of sanctuary - a field where they can bridge the multiple dimensions of their experience, see deeper connections, and transform tension through awareness.
It’s not easy - I’m quite reflective and have been through one or two major transformations…But as I share with clients: evolution is not a straight line, it’s a helix or upward spiral. You revisit old territory from a higher vantage point and with a bit more spaciousness, each time clearing up deeper levels of self-doubt and pain.
It’s not that we have to choose between the unbearable lightness of nothing mattering or the crushing weight of everything mattering, but to be with what’s underneath the dilemma in the first place. From there, the middle way emerges. It’s not a place but a principle for meeting every moment as it is, with energy and wisdom.
The characters in Kundera’s book also find a measure of peace, not through tidy answers but when they eventually settle into the unresolvable ambiguity of life and choose simplicity and care.
So if you feel torn between unresolvable questions and the tasks of ordinary life, know that you’re living something both hard and transformative.
Where can you allow some space in the midst of it all?
Have a great week,
Amina
